Green energy along the runway at Rotterdam The Hague Airport

A large solar park was recently built right next to the runway of Rotterdam - The Hague Airport, with which the airport will generate its own power. In April 2022, the park went into operation, and to connect the park to the power grid, Brownline surveyed a 490 meter / 1607 ft long bore in December 2021 on behalf of Holland Drilling.

This large solar park is a major step towards sustainability for the airport. With nearly 37,000 solar panels on a 7.7 hectare / 19 acre area, the solar park will annually generate 14 gigawatt hours of green electricity. This is three times the airport’s electricity consumption, which will make Rotterdam The Hague Airport energy neutral. The parties involved are currently discussing how the generated electricity can be used locally.

What made this project special is that the solar panels are installed beside the runway. In order to make an underground connection possible, the drill had to pass under the runway. In such a situation, the choice for Brownline’s Gyro Steering Tool was an obvious one. Fast set-up time, combined with extreme accuracy and free from external interference make our GST the perfect tool for this challenging location.

After completion of this project, the airport can continue its journey towards a green future!
