Drilling for Dutch wind power

At an increasing rate Brownline is involved in projects for the transition to green energy. For example, we recently surveyed a drill job for the renovation of a wind farm on Goeree-Overflakkee in the Dutch province South Holland.

In the Netherlands, all agreements on climate goals have been combined in the National Climate Agreement. This agreement was concluded in 2013 between 47 parties: governments, employers, trade unions, nature and environmental organizations, other civil society organizations and financial institutions. The agreement is divided into 12 domains, one of which relates to energy generation. Within this domain, the province of South Holland has the goal of generating 735.5MW of wind energy in 2020.

Part of the province's objective can be achieved by renewing the Piet de Wit wind farm near Ooltgensplaat. Currently, the wind farm contains twelve turbines that together account for 43 million kWh of electricity production on an annual basis. During the renewal, seven larger turbines will be installed that will produce no less than 80,000 MWh of electricity per year. This means that the number of households that can be supplied with electricity generated by wind power will be more than doubled; from 12,550 to approximately 30,000.

Solid cabling is extremely important to manage this major increase in power production. A bundle of four pipe sleeves must be installed, in which the cables will be placed to connect the new wind turbines to the high-voltage station. The trajectory of this 820-meter-long drill starts right next to the N59 highway, crosses under a nature reserve and ends at the high-voltage station. In addition to strong interference at the entry and exit points, surface access was impossible and the trajectory runs under a vulnerable area. It was determined quickly that the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool was the right choice for this job. The drill was carried out with great accuracy and efficiency, so that the remainder of the project can be completed within the set time.
