14 bores for wind farm Maasvlakte 2

In May and June 2022, Brownline has contributed to the construction of a large wind farm on the beach of Maasvlakte 2, the westernmost expansion of the Rotterdam port. No less than 14 bores were performed using our Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool, to install cable connections.

A large wind farm is being constructed on the beach and the outer edge of Maasvlakte 2. Commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, 22 wind turbines are to be constructed by energy company Eneco, which will be able to produce 416 Gigawatt hours of green energy yearly. This should make the Ministry energy neutral soon. Ballast Nedam was contracted for the balance of plant and the cable scope was subcontracted to A.Hak Electron.

For the 12 turbines on the beach, 14 horizontal directional drillings took place to install cable connections. Holland Drilling is involved in this project as A.Hak Electron’s subcontractor. Commissioned by them, Brownline surveyed the pilot drillings.

Along the coastline, 11 bores measuring 450 m / 1476 ft were executed between the turbines. In addition, three parallel bores measuring 220 m / 722 ft were drilled near one of the middle turbines. This location will be a cable connection hub. Altogether, this project involved a total of 5610 m / 18406 ft of drilled length. For this large project, some drill days saw three Brownline tools in use simultaneously, to survey pilot bores at different locations.

Thanks to the deployment of Brownline’s Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool, the bores could take place unhindered and very accurately. This helped to complete the drillings within the planned schedule. With this project, Brownline once again makes a contribution to the energy transition. This wind farm represents a large step in developing sustainable energy production.
